Music
Curriculum
At St Paulinus, Music is for every child. Our curriculum is cumulative and coherent, enabling pupils to develop as musicians step by step from EYFS to Year 6. Children learn to listen, appraise, perform, compose and evaluate, with each skill revisited and extended over time. They are introduced to a wide range of musical genres, traditions and cultures, developing appreciation for music as both an art form and a universal language. Performance opportunities, from classroom music-making to whole-school celebrations, help pupils grow in confidence and creativity. Music connects strongly with RE, history and other subjects, deepening pupils’ understanding of culture, identity and human expression.
Vocabulary
Musical vocabulary is carefully sequenced and built cumulatively. Pupils learn terms such as rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo, timbre, composition and notation, gradually extending to more complex concepts like harmony, texture and improvisation. This vocabulary enables children to think and talk like musicians, describing, analysing and reflecting on their own work and that of others.
Implementation
Music is taught through a blend of practical performance, listening and composition. Pupils learn to sing with accuracy and expression, play tuned and untuned instruments and read simple notation. Lessons are sequenced so that skills are revisited in new contexts, ensuring long-term retention. Whole-class instrumental tuition and opportunities to join choirs or ensembles extend learning beyond the classroom. Teachers model musical language and encourage reflection, while regular retrieval and rehearsal help secure key knowledge and fluency.
