Curriculum
Geography at St Paulinus opens children’s eyes to the world and their place within it. Our curriculum is coherent, cumulative and connected: pupils begin by exploring their immediate environment before building outward to the UK, Europe and the wider world. Over time, they develop knowledge of places, people, environments and processes, and revisit key ideas with increasing depth. Children learn both substantive knowledge (facts, concepts, locations) and disciplinary skills (thinking geographically, using evidence, analysing patterns). They explore geographical themes such as sustainability, interdependence and diversity, preparing them to be informed and responsible global citizens.
Vocabulary
Geographical vocabulary is introduced explicitly and practised consistently. Pupils learn terms such as continent, equator, erosion, climate, trade, urbanisation and diversity, building a secure and growing bank of subject-specific language. Teachers ensure misconceptions are addressed and accurate terminology is embedded, enabling pupils to think, talk and reason like geographers.
Implementation
Lessons are designed to be investigative and engaging. Pupils use maps, atlases, globes and digital resources to explore places and processes. Retrieval tasks ensure prior knowledge is revisited, while enquiry questions encourage critical thinking and reasoning. Fieldwork and local studies help pupils apply knowledge in real-world contexts, gradually building towards more complex global comparisons. Teachers sequence content deliberately so pupils can make meaningful links and retain knowledge over time.
