Respiratory Illnesses, Including COVID-19
Respiratory infections, such as the common cold and COVID-19, are common in children, particularly during the winter months. For most children, these illnesses are mild and improve quickly with rest and plenty of fluids.
COVID-19 Testing
Routine testing for COVID-19 ended in April 2022. Current guidance from the UK Health Security Agency advises that children and young people should not be tested for COVID-19 unless this is recommended by a healthcare professional.
Can my child attend school?
Children can continue to attend school if they have mild symptoms only, such as:
- a runny nose
- a sore throat
- a slight cough
As long as they are otherwise well, they are encouraged to attend as normal.
Helping to Prevent the Spread of Infection
We encourage all children to follow simple hygiene practices:
- Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue
- Dispose of tissues promptly
- Wash hands regularly with soap and water
In school, we continue to support good infection control by:
- Promoting regular handwashing
- Maintaining good cleaning routines
- Ensuring classrooms are well ventilated
When to Seek Medical Advice
If you are concerned about your child’s health, particularly for children under 2 years old, please seek medical advice.
