St Paulinus Primary Rationale

As part of a new primary National Curriculum, taking effect from September 2014, learning French has become a requirement for children within KS2.

Children’s language learning encourages curiosity about languages, improves their understanding of what they hear and read, and provides them with the ability to express themselves in speech and in writing. There is a strong focus on developing their knowledge of how language works and providing opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes.

Learning about other cultures is a liberation from insularity and the curriculum provides an opportunity for children explore everyday life, traditions and celebrations in Francophone countries and to compare it with their own cultural experiences.

We will ensure consistency and progression in the school’s approach to Modern Foreign Languages, enabling children to deepen their understanding of the world and to express their ideas and thoughts in another language.

Modern Foreign Languages in Key Stage 2 develops pupils’ knowledge and understanding of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary. There is an emphasis on practical communication, asking and answering questions, expressing ideas and responding. It is the foundation for further language teaching at Key Stage 3.
